This is a large fine 19th century oil on canvas depicting an angler fishing on the River Lledr in North Wales with famous Fish Inn on the hillside beyond by the eminent Victorian artist Robert Gallon (1845-1925). ‘The Fish Inn, the Lledr Valley’ is signed by the artist and hangs in a superb quality new commissioned bespoke gold metal leaf swept frame. When the early English landscape painter David Cox first began visiting North Wales he stayed at The Fish Inn, a hostelry that subsequently became the favourite base of many important Victorian artists when painting in North Wales.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the finest condition it can be for its age, having been professionally cleaned and re-varnished. Clients should also note that fully insured, tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.
One of the finest late Victorian landscape painters, Robert Gallon’s precision and attention to detail is comparable to that of his contemporary Benjamin Williams Leader. Between 1868 to 1903 Robert Gallon exhibited 32 works at The Royal Academy and 27 at the British Institution in London.
