This is a fine late 19th / early 20th century oil on canvas depicting ‘La Maison de la Reine’ in the park of the Château de Versailles by the famous French artist Maurice Levis (1860-1940). The painting is signed by the artist and presented in a newly commissioned fine quality Montparnasse swept frame. La Maison de la Reine was built for Marie Antoinette at Versailles by King Louis XVI in 1783.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the very finest condition it can be for its age having been professionally cleaned and re-varnished.
A native of Paris, Maurice Levis studied under Henri Harpignies, Jules Lefebvre and Pierre Billet. He became famous for his landscapes and genre subjects characterised by his light palette and a good eye for composition. He was elected a member of the Society of French Artists in 1888 and received awards at the Paris Salon in 1895, 1896 and 1923.
