This is a very large fine 19th century oil painting depicting Christopher Columbus explaining his plans to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain on the eve of his voyage of discovery to the Americas by the famous Austrian painter Rudolf Alfred Höger (1877-1930). Signed by the artist, ‘Columbus before Ferdinand & Isabella, 1492’ captures one of the most significant events in the history of both Europe and North America. The painting is sold in a newly commissioned fine quality Baroque giltwood frame.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the very finest condition it can be for its age having just been cleaned and re-varnished.
Rudolf Alfred Höger was a very successful painter of densely populated well executed subject pictures. His detailed canvas’ of historical themes and jovial genre scenes of Austrian social events have always been very popular with collectors across Europe and North America.
