This is a large fine early 1900s oil on canvas depicting an 18th century English man-o’-war during ‘An Encounter with Pirates’ by the eminent British maritime artist Bernard Finegan Gribble (1872-1962). This superb maritime painting is signed by the artist and sold in a newly commissioned fine quality English Baroque giltwood frame.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the very finest condition it can be for its age, having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished.
Bernard Finegan Gribble was one of the most popular Britsih marine painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Between 1891 and 1941 he exhibited 67 paintings at the Royal Academy, and many others at the Paris Salon.
Franklin D. Roosevelt was one of many celebrity owners of Gribble paintings, one of which hung in the Oval Office of the White House when he became US President in 1933. Other notable purchasers of Gribble paintings included Queen Mary, the German Kaiser, and Jackie Onassis.
