This is a large fine 19th century oil on canvas capturing a magnificent chestnut hunter outside a country house stable by the famous English animal artist James Clark (1812-1884). The painting is signed by the artist and hangs in its original neoclassical Victorian gilt frame.

As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the very finest condition it can be for its age.

From the well-known Clark family of English painters, James Clark was born in Chelsea in West London and travelled widely across Britain painting commissioned portraits of prized livestock and thoroughbred horses. Of his many children, 4 of his sons – Samuel, Albert, Octavius Thomas, and James Albert – all went on to become successful Victorian painters, predominantly of animals and landscapes. James and his youngest son James Albert would frequently collaborate on works together – as with the painting being sold here – and would consequently sign their pictures ‘James Clark and Son’.
