‘Above Knaresborough’ by Henry Jutsum (1816-1869).

The painting – which depicts shepherds and their collie dog tending sheep in the hills above the town of Knaresborough in North Yorkshire – is signed by the artist and dated 1865.

Henry Jutsum was a pupil of the early 19th century English landscape painter James Stark (1794-1859) and naturally his work reflects the influence of the Norwich School and the Dutch Golden Age Masters. Jutsum first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1836, aged 20, and went on to show another 67 paintings there. He also exhibited 75 works with the British Institution and 19 at the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Royal Society of British Artists. Today, paintings by Henry Jutsum are held in the Royal Collection and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
