Auguste-Émile Pinchart (1842-1920). The painting - which depicts a girl teasing a bust of the god Pan with a reed - is signed by the artist and presented in a superb quality, bespoke gold metal leaf frame. In Greek mythology, when the lustful Pan attempted to seduce a nymph by the name of Syrinx, she ran to a nearby river and asked for assistance from the water nymphs, the Naiads. These reeds became the Pipes of Pan. All our paintings are sold in the finest condition they can be for their age having just been professionally cleaned, conserved and re-varnished. In 1892 he moved to Munich where he would form his own unique style which blended his neoclassical training and ancient Greco-Roman themes with Vienna Secessionism, a fondness for Rubens, and the romantic Symbolism of his friend Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) and the German ‘painter prince’ Franz von Struck (1863-1928). In 1898 Rothaug exhibited at Emperor Franz Joseph’s Jubilee Exhibition in Vienna and began a long association with the Glaspalast in Munich and the Great Art Exhibitions in Berlin. From 1909 his work was hung annually at the Künstlerhaus exhibitions alongside those of his contemporaries Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele (1890-1818). Walter Charles Horsley (1855-1921). The painting - which depicts - young Egyptian girl on the bank of the River Nile - is signed by the artist and further signed and inscribed (verso) with the remains of the artist’s own label (Campden Hill, Kensington being the family’s address in London). ‘An Almeh on the Nile’ was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1910 An ‘almeh’ was the name given to a young female performer in 18th and 19th century Egypt.
