‘Colombina’ by Arnulf de Bouché (1872-1945). This large fine oil on canvas depicting a semi-naked young woman playing with a figurine of Harlequin is signed by the artist and hangs in a newly commissioned bespoke Impressionist frame. Colombina is the original Italian name for the coquettish lover of Harlequin in the traditional Commedia dell’arte.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in excellent condition having just been professionally cleaned, restored and re-varnished. Clients should also note that tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.
Arnulf de Bouché studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Gabriel von Hackl (1843-1926) and Paul Hoecker (1854-1910). In 1901 he exhibited paintings at the Glaspalast and the Great Berlin Art Exhibition. Arnulf de Bouche’s favourite subjects reflected the late 19th century fascination with North African and Middle Eastern imagery but unlike the Academic Masters of Orientalism his style became increasingly Impressionistic.
