The painting depicts an 18th century scene featuring members of the Cavendish family (the Dukes of Devonshire), owners of Hardwick hall for almost 350 years, between 1608 and 1956.
Robert Alexander Hillingford was a highly successful Victorian painter of historical and literary scenes. He is most famous for his highly detailed paintings of the Napoleonic Wars as well as Shakespearian subjects. Between 1864 and 1902 Hillingford exhibited 29 works at the Royal Academy, and numerous others the British Institution, and the Royal Society of British Artists in London.
