Marie Antoinette & Marie Thérèse at Versailles - 19th Century French Oil Painting

‘Marie Antoinette & Marie Thérèse at Versailles’ by Heinrich Lossow 1843-1897. The painting is signed by the artist, and hangs in its original 19th century Louis XVI gold leaf frame. During her time at the Palace of Versailles, Princess Marie Thérèse of Savoy was a close confidante of Queen Marie Antoinette.

As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in excellent condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and re-varnished. Clients should also note that tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.

Heinrich Lossow was a successful German painter of Rococo subject pictures who studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under Karl Theodor von Piloty. He also worked extensively in Italy where he perfected the historical costume genre painting alongside Arturo Ricci (1854-1919), Vittorio Reggianini (1858-1938) and Frederic Soulacroix (1858- 1933).

Today, Heinrich Lossow is best known for his erotic paintings of fine ladies and gentleman, nuns and monks captured in a variety of explicit poses, his most notorious picture being ‘The Sin’. Of course, he wasn’t the only successful painter to practise an enthusiastic side-line in transgressive illustrations; both Rembrandt and Turner did exactly the same!
