This is a very large fine 19th century landscape oil painting of a young mother walking from a cottage down to the river’s edge accompanied by a dog and a small flock of geese by the prominent Royal Academy artist James Edwin Meadows (1828-1888). ‘A Summer Afternoon’ is a typically beautiful example of the artist’s work and hangs in a fine Mid-20th century Louis XVI giltwood swept frame.
The most accomplished and successful painter of the famous Meadows family of Victorian artists, James Edwin Meadows exhibited 26 works at the Royal Academy, 17 at the British Institution, and 55 with the Royal Society of British Artists at the Suffolk Street Gallery, as well as at the prestigious Walker Art in Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, and the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin.
