Edward Charles Barnes began his career in his home city of Birmingham before moving to London in 1862. He lived for many years in Hampstead, then still a village on the outskirts of London, painting romantic figural scenes and portraits of exotic Spanish beauties, which in the 1860s and 70s were at the height of their popularity.

Edward Charles Barnes exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1856, his last painting being hung there in the year of his death in 1882. Barnes preferred location was however the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Royal Society of British Artists. Edward Charles Barnes was elected a full member of the RBA in 1865.
