A fine portrait of ‘Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ by Henry Siddons Mowbray . The painting is signed by the artist. Augustus Saint-Gaudens was the foremost American sculptor of the 19th century and one of the most important figures in the history of American Art.

Henry Siddons Mowbray studied in the great French Academic tradition at the studio of Leon Bonnat in Paris. Between 1880 and 1885, Mowbray exhibited at the Salon before moving back to the US where he became a leading figure in the ‘American Renaissance’ and a close friend of one of the fathers of American Art, Augustus Saint-Gaudens.


In his illustrious career, Siddons Mowbray painted numerous commissions for many of the period’s most famous personalities including J.P. Morgan and F.W. Vanderbilt. Between 1902 and 1904, Siddons Mowbray served as director of the American Academy in Rome.
