‘An Almeh on the Nile’ by Walter Charles Horsley (1855-1921). The painting is signed by the artist and further signed and inscribed (verso) with the remains of the artist’s own label (Campden Hill, Kensington being the family’s address in London). ‘An Almeh on the Nile’ was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1910
An ‘almeh’ was the name given to a young female performer in 18th and 19th century Egypt. The girls were not concubines, they were educated young women trained in dancing, singing and poetry who would be present at festivals and traditional gatherings, not unlike an Egyptian version of the Japanese geisha.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in excellent condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and re-varnished. Clients should also note that tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.
The son of the eminent Royal Academician John Callcott Horsley (1817-1903), Walter Charles Horsley entered the Academy Schools in 1872 and was awarded a medal for his portraiture. After making his debut at the Royal Academy in 1875, he went on to exhibit 55 times at the R.A. Summer Exhibition as well as with the Royal Society of British Artists at the Suffolk Street Gallery. Unlike many late 19th century painters of fashionable ‘Orientalist’ scenes, Walter Horsley travelled extensively in Europe, the Middle East and India and got to intimately know and appreciate the people he painted. It was his many expeditions to Egypt – and especially Cairo and the banks of the Nile – that produced many of his finest Orientalist paintings.
