Luis Ferdinand Silas was a London-born painter of highly colourful floral still lifes that stylistically owed much to both the traditions of the Dutch Old Masters and French Post Impressionists. In 1883 he married the celebrated Russian opera singer Letizia Sara Paggi. Their son, Ellis (who studied with both his father Louis Silas and his friend James Whistler) went on to become a distinguished war artist.
