On the River Severn - 19th Century English Summer Landscape Oil Painting

2950

This is a fine 19th century landscape oil on canvas depicting a summer day ‘On the River Severn’ in the county of Worcestershire by the eminent Victorian painter David Bates (1841-1920). The painting is signed by the artist and sold in a superb quality newly commissioned, bespoke gold metal leaf frame.

As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in excellent condition, having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished. Clients should also note that tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.

From 1855 David Bates worked for Royal Worcester as a porcelain painter before becoming a professional landscape artist. By the 1880s he was one of the most popular and successful of the Birmingham School alongside Benjamin Williams Leader and Samuel Henry Baker, and his patrons included the president of the Royal Academy himself, Lord Leighton.

Bates exhibited many works at the Royal Academy, Grosvenor Gallery, Royal Society of British Artists, and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. Today his work hangs in the collections of Liverpool Museum and Worcester City Art Gallery.
