La Jeune Musicienne - 19th Century French Belle Epoque Oil Painting Portrait
This is a very large fine 19th century French Belle Epoque oil on canvas depicting a girl holding a mandolin by the eminent Parisian painter Édouard Vimont (1846-1930). ‘La Jeune Musicienne’ is signed by the artist and dated 1889.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the finest condition it can be for its age, having been professionally cleaned and re-varnished. Clients should also note that fully insured, tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.
Édouard Vimont studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and in the studios of Alexandre Cabanel and Théodore Maillot. Vimont exhibited at the Salon from 1870, winning several medals of honour and eventually becoming a full member of the Salon des Artistes in 1892.
Works by Vimont appear very rarely on the open market and the whereabouts of some of his most important paintings are unknown. Predominantly a painter of grand history paintings in the French academic tradition, I suspect one reason for this is that his neoclassical Greco-Roman subjects would have been coveted by the Nazi’s who of course stoke a great many important paintings in the 1930’s and 40’s.
