Henri Guillaume Schlesinger studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna before moving to live and work in Paris. Between 1840-1889 he exhibited many paintings at the Paris Salon, becoming one of mid-19th century France’s most popular subject painters. In 1837 Schlesinger produced one of his most famous pictures; a large equestrian portrait of Sultan Mahmoud II which still hangs in the collection of the palace of Versailles.
Although German by birth, in 1866 Henri-Guillaume Schlesinger was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur, officially becoming a French citizen four years later.
