This is a fine large 19th century English summer landscape oil on canvas depicting cattle watering on a Devonshire river by the eminent Victorian painter William Williams of Plymouth (1808-1895). ‘On the Teign, Devon’ is signed by the artist, and sold in a superb quality bespoke gold metal leaf frame.
Beginning in 1846, Williams exhibited 34 paintings at the Royal Academy, 40 at the British Institution and 55 at the Royal Society of British Artists at Suffolk Street.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the finest condition it can be for its age, having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished. Clients should also note that fully insured, tracked and signed for international shipping is complimentary.
William Williams chose not to live and work in London as was then the custom amongst prominent painters, instead spending most of his working life in Devonshire. Although he painted some outstanding maritime scenes, Williams is most famous as a landscape artist and primarily for capturing the countryside of the South West of England.
