This is a large 19th century river landscape oil on canvas depicting a fly fisherman and a small group of cattle watering upon ‘The Tees near Greta Bridge’ in Yorkshire by the eminent Victorian landscape artist Charles Smith (1843-1917). The painting is signed by the artist, dated 1871 and further inscribed verso with Smith’s address and the original sale price of £350 ($37,000 in today’s money). It is sold here in a good quality vintage Louis XV style swept frame.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the very finest condition it can be for its age having just been cleaned and re-varnished.
Between 1857 and 1908 Charles Smith exhibited more than 50 landscapes at the Royal Academy, 30 paintings at the British Institution and well over 100 with the Royal Society of British Artists at the Suffolk Street Gallery.
