This is a large fine mid-19th century oil on canvas depicting a view of the dramatic northern shores of ‘Lake Garda’ from the village of Desenzano with a young family in the foreground by the eminent Royal Academy artist James Vivien de Fleury (exh.1847-1869). The painting is signed by the artist and dated 1864. It is also titled and re-signed verso.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in excellent condition, and presented in a superb 19th century gilt Louis XVI swept frame.
Between 1847 and 1869, James Vivien de Fleury exhibited 16 paintings at the Royal Academy, 12 at the British Institution and a further 36 with the Royal Society of British Artists at the Suffolk Street Gallery in London. Although he painted works featuring the south of England, the Channel Islands and Northern France, it is his large oils of the Italian Lakes that made him most famous. Works of the quality of the painting being offered here have sold at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Bonham’s in London and at other prestigious European auction houses (see images).
