This is an important and very fine original 19th century oil painting of the famous Renaissance polymath ‘Galileo before the Roman Inquisitition’ by the celebrated listed British Victorian painter, Robert Alexander Hillingford (1828-1904).
Hillingford became internationally famous for his wonderfully detailed paintings of great moments in world history, British military campaigns, and Shakespearian scenes.
The outstanding work being sold here captures Galileo’s appearance before the Roman Inquisition in 1633 when he was accused of heresy for his belief in the theory of heliocentrism. After refusing to recant, despite the threat of torture, Galileo was placed under house arrest where he remained for the rest of his life.
Robert Hillingford exhibited 29 works at the Royal Academy between 1866-1902, as well at the British Institution, and the Royal Society of British Artists. Fine oils by Robert Alexander Hillingford, such as the one being offered here, sell through international fine art dealers and at the most prestigious auction houses worldwide.
