Henley on Thames
This is a very large fine 19th century oil on canvas depicting a man and his dog walking across an old wooden bridge at Hambleden Weir, ‘Henley-on-Thames’ in Oxfordshire by the famous British landscape painter Robert Gallon (1845-1925). This wonderfully executed summer landscape is signed by the artist and – as with all of the paintings we sell – presented framed and in superb condition. Robert Gallon is one of my personal favourites of the period and this is as fine an example of his work I have ever come across.
Between 1868 to 1903 Robert Gallon exhibited 32 works at The Royal Academy and 27 at the British Institution. One of the finest late Victorian landscape painters, Gallon’s precision and attention to detail is on a par with that of his contemporary Benjamin Williams Leader.
