This is a very fine 19th century oil on canvas depicting a spectacular Scottish Highland landscape with sheep grazing on the edges of a loch in summertime by the famous Victorian artist Alfred Augustus Glendening Snr. (1840-1910). The painting is signed by the artist.
Glendening is best known for his beautifully detailed landscape views, particularly those featuring large bodies of water. Perhaps his most desirable works are those depicting magnificent rural views of the River Thames and – as in the case of the painting being sold here – the Highlands of Scotland.
Along with Benjamin Williams Leader and Alfred de Breanski Snr, Glendening became one of the most popular British landscape artists of the second half of the 19th century. Today landscapes by Glendening are arguably even more popular, and in great demand on both sides of the Atlantic.
Between 1861 and 1903 Glendening exhibited 47 paintings at the Royal Academy, together with 77 works at the Royal Society of British Artists and numerous others at the British Institution between 1861 and 1892.
