This is a very large and fine 19th century oil on canvas depicting a gloriously tranquil scene on a ‘Silent Beach’ by the eminent Victorian artist, Oliver Rhys (1846-1923). The fact that Rhys was most famous for his detailed figural paintings of classical maidens and peasant girls makes this huge work all the more exceptional. The painting is signed by the artist and dated 1881.
As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the very finest condition it can be for its age, having just been professionally cleaned and re-varnished.
Between 1876 and 1893, Rhys exhibited eight works at the Royal Academy in addition to numerous others at the prestigious Grosvenor Gallery, and the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Royal Society of British Artists.
