This is a fine rare 19th century oil on canvas depicting a man and his dog sitting in hillside woodland above a river before an expansive view of an English coastal town by the eminent Victorian landscape artist Alfred Pollentine (1836-1890). The painting is signed by the artist and dated 1889.
Although famous for his iconic scenes of Venice, Alfred Pollentine did paint the occasional English coastal landscape but they are rare. Between 1861 and 1880 Pollentine exhibited many works at both the British Institute and the Royal Society of British Artists in London though his work was in such high demand he never replied upon exhibition sales to make a living.
