This is a large fine 19th century river landscape depicting anglers playing a large salmon above a weir in the Highlands of Scotland by the famous Victorian artist John Evan Hodgson RA (1831-1895). The painting is signed by the artist and dated 1874.

Though English by birth, Hodgson was brought up in Russia where he was inspired by the old masters in the Hermitage collection in St Petersburg. Returning to England in 1853 he enrolled at the Royal Academy schools, and began establishing himself as an accomplished and successful painter of historical subjects. Between 1856 and 1983, Hodgson exhibited 90 works at the Royal Academy, including many iconic scenes from British history and latterly fine Orientalist paintings as well as a handful of rural British scenes. It is one such work that we are offering for sale here.

In 1882 Hodgson was appointed Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy, and co-authored a celebrated history of that institution’s first sixty years. John Evan Hodgson became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Painters, and was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1879.
