The Road Home, Loch Katrine

£14950

This is a large fine masterpiece oil painting by the famous 19th century landscape painter, John Knox (1778-1845). One of Scotland’s most important landscape painters, Knox’s early work was composed in the classical tradition of Claude Lorrain. He later developed a mature style that uniquely captures Scotland’s most famous locations.

‘The Road Home’ depicts one such iconic vista; the majestic beauty and sweeping grandeur Loch Katrine in the heart of the Trossachs, the birthplace of Rob Roy, and the setting for Sir Walter Scott’s poem ‘The Lady of the Lake’.

John Knox was in the news in 2015 when his long-lost masterpiece ‘Glasgow Fair’ was finally tracked down after more than 100 years to a private collection in the United States.

The work being sold here was last offered for sale at Sotheby’s in 2008 with an estimate of $55,000-£75,000. In subject, scale and execution this very fine museum quality work ranks alongside ‘Glasgow Fair’ as one of the artists’ most important paintings.
